Alexander Wang | The Comeback Kid

by Danielle Combs
“Go with your instinct and your gut. It sounds cliché, but never give up and just keep on.”

Fresh off the heels of departing esteemed French fashion house Balenciaga—fashion’s golden boy—Alexander Wang is ready to seize his eponymous line with a clearer, more distinct vision in mind for his growing global brand.

To the uniformed masses Wang is still considered a newcomer, a fresh face still honing his aesthetic, but after his stint at Balenciaga it’s apparent the designer is ready to build the fashion house he’s always envisioned for himself. Wang was born in San Francisco, but shortly moved to New York City to attend Parsons Design School in 2002. At 19, he launched his label in 2004 and his clientele of perennially hip girls, A-listers and the industry’s biggest models—who want to look sleek and cool, but still shop high-fashion—has grown in spades. By 2008, Wang had won his first CFDA award and his meteoric rise to fame has continued ever since.

Being appointed at Balenciaga was a milestone in Wang’s career but it was also a tough act to follow-up once famed Nicolas Ghesquière stepped down. Wang made valiant attempts to produce collections that Balenciaga's clientele would clamor for and business was booming—sales were up. Yet, there was a disconnect amongst the clothes coupled with Wang’s streetwise finesse he’s known for and undeniably gifted at.  With the pressures of steering a fully-fledged house off his plate, there’s no telling how far Wang will go and it’s safe to say the industry will be holding its breath for his awaited spring 2016 womenswear collection. Here we take a look at the designer's most memorable collections.
