ART BASEL + Fashion

by ICONHOUSE
What began as little more than a swanky block party has grown into a major international art fair.

Each year, Art Basel in Miami Beach, Florida proves a crossroads for artists, fashion icons, musicians, and other major figures in today’s cultural world. This year proves no exception, with many inspiring cross-medium collaborations providing art beyond the canvas.

Dance company L.A. Dance Project will perform “Hearts & Arrows,” a dance piece choreographed by founder Benjamin Millepied. A renowned choreographer, Millepied may be more familiar as the director of the Paris Opera, and husband to Natalie Portman. Commissioned by Van Cleef & Arpels as part of the “Gems” trilogy, the piece highlights the jewelry maison’s timeless relationship with dance. While bejeweled ballerinas have been among its signature pieces for decades, Millepied’s series is not their first commissioned work with a choreographer: “Jewels,” a collaboration in the 1960s with George Balanchine, considered the father of contemporary ballet and co-founder of the New York City Ballet, precedes the “Gems” trilogy. The dancers are as brilliant as their Van Cleef & Arpels-designed counterparts. Featuring set design by Liam Gillick and score by Philip Glass, view “Hearts & Arrows” at the Olympia Theater at Gusman Center.

Slightly more irreverent but just as chic, Italian luxury brand Moschino will be continuing its collaboration with Jeremy Scott, bringing the spirit of Malibu Barbie east to Miami. Scott will be producing a one-off installation, inviting viewers to “Live the Dream” and celebrate the intersection of high-brow art and today’s pop culture milieu. Featuring a select group of artists, gallerists, musicians and fashion influencers, a Barbie-themed play-land will provide the backdrop for a “love letter to Barbie and all things pink and fabulous,” according to Scott.

The event opens today at the pool terrace at the newly opened Thompson Miami Beach Hotel! We can't wait to see the pictures!

One of the newer collaborations featured during Art Basel is that of Gucci creative director Frida Giannini and Toronto-based artist Kris Knight. December 2 in Miami’s Design District, Knight’s solo show “Smell The Magic” debuted to exciting public response, featuring pastel-colored works inspired by his favorite L7 album and the journey of “going from someone…extremely shy and awkward to being out, talking to people” according to a Style.com interview.

Giannini referenced Knight’s pastel color palette in Gucci’s fall 2014 menswear collection, and earlier this year, commissioned Knight to reimagine Gucci’s iconic Flora pattern. When asked how she chose Knight for the task, Giannini touted his skills with paint as a medium: “the Flora pattern was born as a painting,” and his skill serves the pattern well in its newest incarnation on the resort runway. At his show’s debut, Knight thanked Giannini for her involvement in his artistic progression with Canadian musicians’ records, proving that art, fashion, and music are at constant intersection in Miami Beach this week.

With so much inspiring work happening across all mediums, Art Basel is at the center of action culturally this December. We at ICONHOUSE love what’s coming from the event so far, and can’t wait to see more!
