Jane Fonda

"Ask questions. Stay curious, stay interested. It’s much more important to be interested than to be interesting"

Everyone loves Jane Fonda! Last night was an extraordinary evening in her honor with inspiring, thoughtful and impassioned speeches from Meryl Streep, Sally Field, Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bullock, Cameron Diaz and Michael Douglas, amongst others.

"In film, in fitness, in politics, in family, Mom- you have succeeded." Troy Garrity said of his mother during his touching speech. Jeff Daniels honored her with a hilarious, self-written song, "Abs, Buns and Thighs". Her brother, Peter Fonda, in the coolest aviator Persol sunglasses applauded his older sister, "Nobody has dreamed bigger and nobody has worked harder than my sister, Jane."

George Lucas, Elizabeth Taylor, Morgan Freeman, Sean Connery, Martin Scorsese, Robert DeNiro, Shirley Maclaine—those are just a few of the 41 esteemed talents who have received a coveted AFI Life Achievement Award. Hollywood legend Jane Fonda became the elite group’s newest member (joining her dad, Henry Fonda) when she accepted the award in Los Angeles.

Last evening, it was her acting triumphs, like her Oscar-winning roles in Klute and Coming Home, that were in the spotlight. But to simply lump her in the ‘actress’ category hardly does her justice. Being born into Hollywood royalty, it would have been all too easy to ride that wave, but she has always carved out her own path.

Whether in her acting career or her personal life, she chooses to make a statement. In doing so, she has become a cultural icon and the mother of reinvention (Jane did it first, Madonna). Many know her for her fierce political activism. A 2005 NYT story on her said, “Her political activism, unusual for a movie star in the 70’s, is now so common she seems like the template for contemporary celebrity. Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon and Arnold Schwarzenegger might have had very different careers without her.” She’s also a health role model, thanks to the fitness movement she started in the 80’s.

And of course, there’s that signature Jane Fonda style that has been wowing on the red carpet for decades. Here, some of her favorite designers have shared their thoughts on the award-winning actress and her impeccable style.

"Jane is always chic and modern, and personifies youth. She is a trailblazer for all women." - Tanya Gill, Jane's stylist.

"Jane Fonda endures not only as an artist but a style maven. Her sense of cool modernity inspires us all." - Vera Wang. Jane wore a custom Vera Wang black and white mermaid gown with silk tulle and charmeuse bodice accented by a silk gazaar skirt to receive the Life Achievement award at the 2014 AFI Award Gala June 5, 2014 in Los Angeles.

"Jane's timeless style and elegant beauty embody perfectly the Elie Saab feminine and romantic aesethtic . It is always our highest honor to dress such an iconic woman. Congratulations on this much deserving and very special achievement!” - Elie Saab. Jane was stunning at Cannes this year in Elie Saab.

"Dressing Jane Fonda for her big return to the Cannes spotlight was a privilege and an honour for Pucci and myself, even before starting. I don't think anyone (maybe not even her) expected the huge sensation her arrival would create. She looked perfect and it was sensational. She's a very cool lady, and a fellow Sagittarius! Congratulations Jane!" - Peter Dundas. Jane won over the red carpet at Cannes in 2011 with this barely-pink Pucci.

"Jane Fonda is an icon and her style and beauty is timeless” - Reem Acra. Jane wore this sleek black and white Reem Acra to the 2013 Vanity Fair party.
