The Supermodels Are Back

The more you trust your intuition, the more empowered you become, the stronger you become, and the happier you become. -Gisele Bundchen

Gisele Bundchen at Balenciaga

Now: The Brazilian supe made headlines when she closed Alexander Wang’s Balenciaga show this season. (She also walked in his namesake line’s show for Fall 2012.)

Then: Her big debut on the runways came in 1996 when she walked for Giorgio Armani, D&G, and Alexander McQueen. Signing a 25 million dollar campaign (a record breaking number, at the time) with Victoria’s Secret in 2000, however, was the game-changing moment in her career that brought her global fame.

Stella Tennant at Givenchy

Now: The front row at Givenchy was packed with A-listers like Rihanna and Kanye West, and Riccardo Tisci made sure to fill his runway with models with just as much star power. Tennant, who has lent her face to Givenchy ad campaigns before, was one of the leaders of the pack.

Then: The Scottish beauty (who also happens to be Scottish nobility) has been photographed by the likes of Irving Penn, Mario Testino, and Patrick Demarchelier. The shoot that started it all was ohe she did with Steven Meisel for British Vogue.. She retired in 1998, but has made returns for brands like Burberry and Givenchy.

Karen Elson at Givenchy

Now: These days, Elson is more focused on performing with her troupe, The Citizen Band. The red-haired stunner made an exception for Mr. Tisci’s Fall show. Her last major modeling moment came when she closed the London Olympics with Tennant, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, etc.

Then: Her first major modeling moment was when she landed the cover of French Vogue in December 1996. Karl Lagerfeld solidified her place in fashion history when, in 1998, he called her the “beauty of the millennium” and named her the face of Chanel. Side note: She was formerly married to Jack White.

Frankie Rayder at Givenchy

Now: Rayder is pretty much retired at this point, but came out to walk in the Givenchy show this season.

Then: Givenchy helped kick start her career (she was the face of the label in 1999).  Steven Meisel has also been a long time supporter of Rayder, booking her for a photo session that landed on the cover of Italian Glamour in 1992 and launching her from anonymity to supermodel. She’s also a Pirelli calendar girl, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model, and Victoria’s Secret Angel.
