Matthieu Blazy

by ICONHOUSE

Like a butterfly emerging from its cocoon, Mattheiu Blazy broke the surface of his anonymity this week, unable to avoid getting his deserved recognition as Head Designer at Maison Martin Margiela. Although he hasn’t confirmed this title to the media, it is stated on his public CV. Here we also learn that he has worked at Raf Simons as Senior Designer and began his fashion career with internships at Balenciaga and John Galliano.  At 30 years old he is definitely a new grand master of fashion.  He stands at the helm of a uniquely, enigmatic fashion house, Margiela himself just stepping back in the late 2000s. The collection he just created contains some of the season's most exquisite looks. He brilliantly combines the past and the future; paying homage to his predecessors while still breaking new boundaries of fashion.

By keeping an enigmatic design team it becomes the clothes--the art--of Maison Martin Margiela that makes the headlines. And this season’s Autumn/Winter 2014/2015 collection, under the hand of Blazy, raised the bar. It hit all the notes of being truly artisanal. Vintage found-fabrics were married with simple structures and stunning cuts that held the integrity of the timeless art of fashions past.  There is genius in the modern sensitivity with which the antique textiles were reworked.

It’s hard to pick favorites out of a collection of gold medal looks, but we did our best. We love the buttery-yellow recycled floral chintz cut high on the thigh. The Van Gogh inspired 'iris gown' could have stopped the show in its tracks. The dress with the most iconic inspiration became the most iconic dress of the collection, and perhaps the season! The natural whimsy carried through to the stunning shrimp shoulder stole.

Patchwork found its way to the runway, turning couture with its embellishments, beading and feathers, paired with a bold and beautiful sweetheart sequin bustier. The Autumn/Winter collection also showcased beautiful coats. This classic camel coat is comprised of an amalgamation of vintage swatches from dissected similarly colored coats. This covers a chic column dress of jewel encrusted patches. The cage corset returns with a quilted, patchwork column skirt and a satin Americana garage jacket.

Matthieu Blazy has proved he is a force of creativity and we are excited to have him on the fashion map.
